Ben Hollioake, an English cricketer, died in a car accident in Perth, Australia, in 2002 at the age of 24.The news shocked the English team, who were only starting their first innings of the second Test match against New Zealand at the Basin Reserve.The England team management will ask for the England flag to be flying at half-mast at the Basin Reserve at noon today, and both teams will pause for a moment of silence before play tomorrow morning in remembrance of Hollioake. He had shown great promise as an all-rounder and his untimely death was a loss to English cricket.

 

Hansie Cronje Match-Fixing Scandal (1969-2002)

Hansie Cronje, former captain of the South African cricket team, was involved in a match-fixing scandal in 2000. He turned heads with his performances for the Proteas with both bat and ball during the 1990s, from 1992 to 2000. It was found that Cronje discussed match fixing with an Indian bookmaker. As a result, he was later given a lifetime ban from playing cricket. While the former South African captain first rejected the court’s decision, he was later found guilty in the infamous match-fixing scandal, and his appeal was later denied. This revelation shocked the cricketing world and tarnished the reputation of one of South Africa’s most prominent cricketers. Tragically, Cronje died in a plane crash in 2002.

On July 30, 1979, a plane carrying the Pakistan national cricket team crashed near Karachi, Pakistan.The crash of Pakistan International Airlines Flight 830 remains one of the deadliest aviation accidents in Pakistan’s history. It was a tragic event that had a profound impact on the world of cricket. Among the notable cricketers who died in the crash were the then-captain of the Pakistan national cricket team, Intikhab Alam, and the former captain, Mushtaq Mohammad. The cricketing community mourned the loss of these players, and the incident is remembered as a tragic chapter in the history of the sport. The crash resulted in the deaths of several players and officials, including the renowned Pakistani cricketer Javed Miandad’s father-in-law.

Bob Woolmer, a former England cricketer and Pakistan’s national team coach, was found dead in his hotel room during the 2007 Cricket World Cup in Jamaica. But later, when no evidence of wrongdoing was discovered, it was admitted that he passed away naturally.

In March 2009, the Sri Lankan cricket team’s bus was attacked by terrorists in Lahore, Pakistan.
