It was first introduced in 2020 as a franchise-based cricket tournament, following the model of other successful T20 leagues around the world. The league aimed to promote cricket in Sri Lanka and provide a platform for local and international players to showcase their talent.

The 2023 Lanka Premier League is the fourth season of the Lanka Premier League (LPL). It started on July 30 and will end on August 20, 2023, according to the schedule. There are five teams competing in the competition. The Sri Lanka Cricket is in charge of running the league. The current champs are the Jaffna Kings.

The locations were listed as Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy and R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

Sri Lanka Cricket will donate Rs. 100 million to the ‘Little Hearts Project’ at the LRH Sri Lanka Cricket has made the decision to donate Rs. 100 million to the ‘Little Hearts Project’ at the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children (LRH). The money will be used to help the LRH construct a “Cardiac and Critical Care Complex” that, once completed, will help treat kids with congenital heart conditions (CHD) and other serious illnesses.

Karunaratne was handed a suspended ban of one-year from all forms of cricket and was also fined US $5000 for his breaches.

According to LPL Code of Conduct clause 2.21, Hasan Ali of Dambulla Aura was fined 15% of his match money and handed 1 demerit point.

According to LPL Code of Conduct paragraph 2.21, Kusal Mendis of Dambulla Aura was fined 10% of his match money and given one demerit point.

In the meantime, Naseem Shah of the Colombo Strikers was charged a demerit point and fined 20% of his match fee in accordance with LPL code of conduct article 2.5.

Popularity of Lanka Premier League

Lanka Premier League (LPL) was still a relatively new T20 cricket league in Sri Lanka. While it aimed to promote cricket and attract both local and international audiences, it hadn’t yet reached the same level of popularity as more established T20 leagues like the Big Bash League or Indian Premier League (IPL). The popularity of a cricket league can be measured by factors such as viewership numbers, attendance at matches, sponsorships, player participation, and fan engagement. A total of 557 million people were exposed to the tournament’s debut season via TV, social media, & Traditional media.

During LPL 2023, a total of 24 matches will be played among the five partaking teams Colombo Strikers, Dambulla Aura, Galle Titans, Jaffna Kings and B- Love Kandy. A aggregate of 360 players have been registered for the LPL 2023 players auction including multiple multinational capped and uncapped players. Among the 360 players, Only Suresh Raina registered his name as being from India out of the 360 players.
