WI vs. ENG (3rd T20) – Highlights

In this article, we will discuss the exciting 3rd T20I match between ENG and WI, held on November 14, 2024, in Gros Islet as part of England’s tour of the Caribbean. This nail-biting encounter saw England overcome West Indies in the final overs, winning by 3 wickets with four balls left. West Indies, after setting a target of 146, put up a strong bowling effort, but England’s resilience and steady batting lineup allowed them to clinch the victory.

In West Indies’ innings against England, they struggled to build momentum, ultimately posting 145/8 in their 20 overs. England’s bowlers exerted early pressure, restricting West Indies’ top order to a slow start.

The innings opened shakily, with Shai Hope run out in the very first over for just 4, followed by Evin Lewis falling to Saqib Mahmood in the second over for 3. Mahmood’s bowling made an immediate impact, as he went on to dismiss Nicholas Pooran and Roston Chase, leaving West Indies reeling at 21/4. Shimron Hetmyer also struggled, contributing just 2 runs before Mahmood claimed his third wicket, leaving West Indies in deep trouble at 37/5 by the sixth over.

Captain Rovman Powell then stabilized the innings with a crucial 54 off 41 balls, showing resilience and aggression with three boundaries and four sixes. Romario Shepherd added valuable support with 30 off 28 balls, partnering with Powell to take West Indies past the 100-run mark. Jamie Overton, however, broke the partnership, dismissing Shepherd lbw and later claiming Gudakesh Motie for a duck. Overton finished with impressive figures of 3/20, backing Mahmood’s earlier efforts.

Despite the middle-order collapse, Alzarri Joseph played a quick 21 off 19, while Akeal Hosein added a brisk 8 off 5 to boost the total towards the end. England’s bowlers were disciplined, with Mahmood’s 3/17 and Overton’s 3/20 being the standout performances, while Archer also contributed with a key early wicket. West Indies ended their innings at 145/8, setting England a target of 146 to win

Chasing a target of 146, England faced a challenging innings but ultimately clinched victory in 19.2 overs with a score of 149/7, winning by three wickets. Their chase began cautiously, with opener Phil Salt departing early for just 4 runs off 8 balls, bowled by Akeal Hosein.

Soon after, Jos Buttler also fell cheaply, managing only 4 runs, leaving England at 32/2 by the fifth over. Will Jacks steadied the innings briefly, scoring 32 off 33 balls before being caught by Rovman Powell off Gudakesh Motie, making the score 75/4.

Sam Curran injected momentum into the chase, hitting a brisk 41 off 26 balls with three boundaries and a six, pushing ENG closer to the target. However, after Curran was caught by Shai Hope off Terrance Hinds, England found themselves needing to rebuild at 114/5 in the 16th over.

Liam Livingstone contributed a vital 39 off 28 balls, striking two boundaries and two sixes to keep England on course. Despite losing Livingstone and Dan Mousley towards the end, England stayed in control with Jamie Overton and Rehan Ahmed scoring the final few runs needed to secure the win.

For WI, Akeal Hosein was outstanding with the ball, claiming 4/22 in his four overs, including crucial dismissals of Salt, Buttler, Livingstone, and Mousley. Gudakesh Motie and Terrance Hinds also took one wicket each, but England managed to hold their nerves and cross the line with four balls remaining.
