South Africa vs Pakistan (2nd ODI) – Highlights

In this article, we will discuss the exciting second ODI of the Pakistan tour of South Africa, held under the lights in Cape Town on December 19, 2024. The match showcased a dominant performance by Pakistan, as they secured a commanding 81-run victory. Batting first, Pakistan put up an imposing total of 329, powered by exceptional batting displays across their lineup. In response, South Africa struggled to maintain the required run rate and were bowled out for 248 in 43.1 overs, falling short of the target.

The second ODI between PAK and SA in Cape Town delivered an enthralling contest of cricket, with Pakistan showcasing a well-rounded performance to secure an 81-run victory. Opting to bat first, Pakistan built a formidable total of 329 in 49.5 overs, thanks to a mix of resilient partnerships and explosive finishing.

Saim Ayub and Abdullah Shafique opened the innings, but Shafique fell early for a duck, caught behind off Marco Jansen. Ayub showed promise with a steady 25, but his dismissal brought Captain Babar Azam to the crease. Babar played a characteristic innings of 73 off 95 balls, anchoring Pakistan’s innings with precision.

At the other end, Mohammad Rizwan, leading the team in the absence of the regular skipper, contributed a crucial 80 off 82 deliveries, including seven boundaries and three sixes, adding stability during the middle overs.

Salman Agha chipped in with a quickfire 33, while Kamran Ghulam stole the spotlight with an aggressive 63 off just 32 balls. His innings, laced with four boundaries and five towering sixes, provided the late impetus Pakistan needed to breach the 300-run mark. Jansen and Kwena Maphaka led South Africa’s bowling attack, with Maphaka grabbing 4 wickets and Jansen finishing with 3, but they struggled to contain Pakistan’s momentum.

In reply, South Africa’s chase began on shaky ground. Temba Bavuma, the captain, managed just 12 runs before falling to Naseem Shah. Tony de Zorzi and Rassie van der Dussen attempted to stabilize the innings, but regular wickets kept South Africa under pressure. Abrar Ahmed delivered a fine spell, dismissing de Zorzi for 34 and trapping Aiden Markram for 21.

The standout performer for SA was Heinrich Klaasen, who played a valiant knock of 97 off 74 balls. His innings included eight boundaries and four sixes, giving South Africa a glimmer of hope. However, Shaheen Shah Afridi returned to the attack and dismantled the lower middle order, claiming 4 wickets in his 8-over spell. Naseem Shah complemented Afridi’s brilliance, taking 3 wickets for just 37 runs.

David Miller contributed a cautious 29, but his dismissal by Afridi signaled the end of South Africa’s resistance. The hosts were bowled out for 248 in 43.1 overs, well short of the target.

The match highlighted PAK’s balanced approach, with the batsmen building partnerships and the bowlers executing plans to perfection. Shaheen’s fiery pace and accuracy, coupled with Abrar’s clever variations, ensured a comprehensive victory. This win not only sealed the match but also provided Pakistan with a significant morale boost in the series.
