In the opening match of the Big Bash League 2024, the Perth Scorchers secured a convincing 6-wicket victory over the Melbourne Stars in Perth. Batting first, the Stars managed 146/9, with notable contributions from their middle order but failing to capitalize on a steady start. The Scorchers’ bowlers, led by disciplined spells, kept the total in check

The MS faced challenges in their batting innings, ending with a total of 146/9 in 20 overs. The top order faltered early, with Joe Clarke dismissed for a duck in the second over by Jhye Richardson, and Sam Harper falling lbw to the same bowler for just 1. Thomas Rogers showed some resistance with 14 off 15 balls but was caught off Cooper Connolly, leaving the Stars at a precarious 33/3 in the 7th over.

Skipper Marcus Stoinis steadied the innings with a composed 37 off 33 balls, hitting three boundaries and a six. However, a mix-up led to his run-out at a crucial juncture, further denting the Stars’ momentum. Hilton Cartwright (18 off 17) and Beau Webster (19 off 13) added brief contributions but couldn’t capitalize.

The highlight of the innings was Tom Curran’s counter-attacking knock of 37 off just 19 balls, including three fours and three sixes, which propelled the Stars to a respectable total. The Scorchers’ bowling attack was spearheaded by Jhye Richardson, who claimed impressive figures of 3/19 in 4 overs. He was supported by Lance Morris (2/30) and Jason Behrendorff (1/19), who kept the Stars’ scoring rate in check.

The PS chased down the target of 147 runs with a confident performance, finishing at 150/4 in 17.1 overs. The innings started with early setbacks as Finn Allen fell for 6 to Adam Milne in the opening over, followed by Keaton Jennings, who was dismissed by Peter Siddle for just 4. He built a crucial partnership with skipper Ashton Turner, who played a composed knock of 37 not out off 27 balls. In the latter stages, Nick Hobson provided the finishing touch with a quickfire 27 not out off 14 deliveries, smashing four boundaries and a six to seal the win.

The Stars’ bowlers, led by Tom Curran (1/25 in 4 overs) and Brody Couch (1/27 in 3 overs), kept the Scorchers in check initially but couldn’t stop the onslaught in the middle overs. The Scorchers’ powerful finish ensured they reached the target with 17 balls to spare.
