NZ vs ENG (2nd Test) – Highlights

In this article, we will discuss the thrilling 2nd Test match between ENG and NZ, held in Wellington from December 6 to 8, 2024. England delivered an exceptional all-round performance to secure a massive 323-run victory. The match showcased England’s dominance with the bat and ball, as they outclassed the hosts in every department. From clinical bowling that dismantled New Zealand’s batting lineup to a commanding batting display in their second innings, England’s efforts ensured an emphatic win and a strong statement on their tour of New Zealand.

After scoring 280 in their first innings, England’s bowlers dismantled New Zealand for just 125, gaining a significant advantage. In their second innings, England declared at 427/6, setting an imposing target of 583. Despite some resistance, New Zealand managed only 259 in their final innings. England’s dominant all-round performance ensured a comprehensive win and highlighted their superiority throughout the match.

England’s innings began with early trouble as the top order faltered. Zak Crawley (17), Ben Duckett (0), and Joe Root (3) failed to provide stability, with Matt Henry and Nathan Smith exploiting the conditions to perfection. Henry struck twice, removing Crawley and Duckett, while Smith dismissed Root to leave England reeling at 26/3.

Amid the chaos, Harry Brook played a counter-attacking knock that turned the tide for ENG. His scintillating 123 off 115 balls, laced with 11 fours and five sixes, was a masterclass in aggressive yet controlled batting. Supported ably by Ollie Pope (66), the pair stitched together a vital 174-run partnership that steadied the innings. Pope’s composed knock included seven boundaries and a six, showcasing his ability to adapt to the situation.

The lower order offered some resistance, with Chris Woakes contributing 18 runs. However, Nathan Smith’s four-wicket haul and Will O’Rourke’s three wickets ensured England was bowled out for 280 in 54.4 overs.

New Zealand’s response was subdued as England’s bowlers dominated proceedings. Chris Woakes set the tone with an early breakthrough, removing Devon Conway for 11. Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse then ran through the New Zealand batting lineup, claiming four wickets each.

Kane Williamson (37) tried to anchor the innings but lacked support from the other end. Tom Blundell and Glenn Phillips made brief contributions of 16 runs each, but the middle order crumbled under relentless pressure. Carse’s disciplined lines and Atkinson’s pace and accuracy proved too much for the New Zealand batters, who were bundled out for a mere 125 runs in 34.5 overs.

With a commanding 155-run lead, England set out to extend their advantage. Although Zak Crawley fell early for eight, the rest of the batting order piled on the misery for New Zealand. Ben Duckett and Jacob Bethell shared a massive 187-run partnership for the second wicket, taking the game further away from the visitors.

Duckett, who narrowly missed his century, scored a fluent 92 off 112 balls, while Bethell played a brilliant knock of 96. Both batters displayed exceptional shot selection and capitalized on the loose deliveries, punishing the New Zealand bowlers. Joe Root joined the party with a classy 106, anchoring the innings even as Harry Brook added a quick-fire 55 off 61 balls.

England declared their innings at 427/6, setting NZ an improbable target of 583 runs. Tim Southee and Matt Henry claimed two wickets apiece, but the rest of the bowlers struggled to make an impact.

Faced with a mammoth target, New Zealand’s second innings was an uphill battle from the start. Woakes and Carse struck early to dismiss Conway (0) and Williamson (4), leaving the visitors at 24/3. Tom Latham (24) offered brief resistance, but his dismissal to Carse further deepened the crisis.

Daryl Mitchell’s 32 was the highest score of the innings, as the middle and lower order failed to rise to the occasion. Phillips managed 16, but Shoaib Bashir and Atkinson quickly mopped up the tail, with New Zealand folding for 125 runs once again. Carse added three more wickets to his tally, finishing with impressive match figures, while Woakes and Atkinson continued their fine form.

The lack of partnerships and inability to counter England’s bowlers were glaring issues for New Zealand. Despite a decent start in the first innings, the collapse that followed exposed the fragility of their batting lineup. The bowlers, apart from Henry and Smith, failed to maintain pressure, allowing England to dictate terms.
