PAK vs SA (1st Test) – Highlights

In this article, we will discuss the thrilling 1st Test match between SA and PAK, held at Centurion from December 26 to 29, 2024, during Pakistan’s tour of South Africa. This nail-biting encounter showcased the grit and determination of both sides, culminating in a dramatic two-wicket victory for South Africa.

The hosts, chasing a target of 148, found themselves under immense pressure as Pakistan’s bowlers fought valiantly to defend a modest total. However, Aiden Markram’s stellar performance proved to be the difference, earning him the Player of the Match award. The match was a captivating contest of skill and resilience, with moments that kept fans on the edge of their seats throughout the four days.

The cricketing encounter between Pakistan and South Africa unfolded as a thrilling contest that highlighted the ebbs and flows of Test cricket. The match, played on a challenging wicket that favored both seam and spin, tested the resilience, skill, and temperament of the players. South Africa emerged victorious in a closely fought game, clinching the win by two wickets.

PAK first innings began with cautious optimism as openers Shan Masood and Saim Ayub took their time to assess the conditions. However, both failed to convert their starts, scoring 17 and 14, respectively. The early departure of Babar Azam, who managed only four runs, left Pakistan reeling at 48/3. Kamran Ghulam stepped up with a gritty 54 off 71 balls, showing remarkable composure under pressure.

His innings, laced with boundaries, provided some stability to the innings. Mohammad Rizwan contributed a patient 27, but the rest of the batting lineup faltered against South Africa’s disciplined bowling attack. Dane Paterson was the wrecker-in-chief, claiming a five-wicket haul, while Corbin Bosch provided excellent support with four wickets. Pakistan was eventually bowled out for 211 in 57.3 overs, leaving their bowlers with a modest total to defend.

SA’s response was built around Aiden Markram’s masterful 89 off 144 balls. His innings was a display of technical excellence and mental fortitude as he negotiated the Pakistan bowlers with ease. Contributions from Temba Bavuma (31) and David Bedingham (30) further consolidated South Africa’s position.

However, the standout performer in the innings was Corbin Bosch, whose counterattacking 81 off 93 balls provided the impetus South Africa needed to post a formidable total of 301. Pakistan’s bowlers, led by Khurram Shahzad and Naseem Shah, tried to stem the flow of runs, picking up three wickets each, but they were unable to prevent South Africa from gaining a crucial 90-run lead.

Pakistan’s second innings was a mixed bag. The openers once again showed promise but failed to capitalize, with Shan Masood scoring 28 and Saim Ayub adding 27. The middle order, however, showed more resolve. Saud Shakeel was the standout performer, crafting a sublime 84 off 113 balls.

His innings combined patience and aggression, providing Pakistan with a glimmer of hope. Babar Azam redeemed himself with a well-compiled 50 off 85 balls, adding valuable runs to the total. However, Marco Jansen turned the game on its head with a sensational six-wicket haul. His ability to generate bounce and movement troubled the Pakistani batters, and Pakistan was bowled out for 237, setting South Africa a target of 148 runs.

The chase was anything but straightforward for South Africa. Mohammad Abbas bowled a mesmerizing spell, claiming six wickets for 54 runs. His lethal combination of swing and precision reduced South Africa to 99/8, leaving the match hanging in the balance.

Aiden Markram (37) and Temba Bavuma (40) made crucial contributions, but it was the unbroken ninth-wicket partnership between Marco Jansen (16*) and Kagiso Rabada (31*) that turned the tide. Their fearless approach and decisive stroke play under pressure sealed a dramatic two-wicket win for South Africa.

Pakistan’s bowlers, particularly Abbas, showcased immense skill and heart, but their batters’ inconsistency cost them dearly. For South Africa, the game highlighted the importance of resilience and the value of contributions from the lower order. The performances of Paterson, Bosch, Jansen, and Rabada underscored the depth in their squad. Ultimately, South Africa’s ability to hold their nerve in a tense finish earned them a well-deserved victory.
