HH vs MR (5th Match) – Highlights

In this article, we will discuss the thrilling 5th match of the Big Bash League 2024, played under the lights at Geelong on December 19, 2024. The encounter featured the HH taking on the MR in what turned out to be a one-sided affair. The Hurricanes, struggling to find their rhythm, managed to post a modest total of just 74 runs. In response, the Renegades cruised to victory, reaching the target in just 9 overs with six wickets in hand and a staggering 66 balls to spare.

The match between the Hobart Hurricanes and Melbourne Renegades was a lopsided contest dominated by the Renegades. Played at Geelong, this game showcased the Renegades’ bowling prowess and efficient chase, as they comfortably triumphed by six wickets with 66 balls to spare.

The Hurricanes batted first and had a nightmare outing, folding for a paltry 74 runs in just 12.4 overs. Their innings started poorly when Matthew Wade fell for 5, caught behind off Tom Rogers.

Mitchell Owen showed brief promise with a quick 10 off 7 balls, but his dismissal, also claimed by Rogers, sparked a top-order collapse. Shai Hope (13 off 14) tried to steady the ship, but wickets tumbled around him, including Ben McDermott and Nikhil Chaudhary, who managed only a combined 2 runs.

The middle order fared no better as Tim David, Chris Jordan, and Riley Meredith departed without significant contributions, leaving the Hurricanes reeling at 40/8 in under 8 overs. Nathan Ellis, the skipper, offered some resistance with a gritty 35 off 29 balls, featuring five boundaries and a six.

However, his effort was the only silver lining for the HH, as Adam Zampa cleaned up the tail to end the innings at 74. Fergus O’Neill, Tom Rogers, and Will Sutherland were the standout bowlers for the Renegades, each picking up three wickets.

Chasing a modest target of 75, the Renegades’ start was less than ideal. Jake Fraser-McGurk fell early for 5, bowled by Billy Stanlake. However, the experienced Tim Seifert anchored the innings with an aggressive unbeaten knock of 37 off just 19 deliveries.

His innings included four boundaries and two sixes, ensuring there were no hiccups in the chase. Josh Brown contributed a handy 13 off 11 before falling to Nathan Ellis, who also dismissed Jacob Bethell for 3. Laurie Evans added 7 off 5 but fell to Riley Meredith.

With Seifert at the crease, ably supported by Mackenzie Harvey (10* off 8), the Renegades comfortably reached the target in just 9 overs. Despite the Hurricanes’ Nathan Ellis delivering a commendable spell of 3-0-12-2, the total was too small to defend.

This match highlighted the Hurricanes’ frailty in the batting department and the Renegades’ clinical approach with both bat and ball. With this win, the MR stamped their authority early in the tournament, leaving the Hurricanes with much to ponder as they look to bounce back in the competition.
