Ace India pacer Jasprit Bumrah missed 11 months of action due to a stress fracture on his back. He made a comeback during India’s recent T20I series against Ireland. Bumrah led the team to a 2-0 series win and bagged the Player of the Series award after picking up four wickets in two games. His next assignment is the Asia Cup 2023 which begins on Wednesday, August 30.
Legendary West Indies pacer Curtly Ambrose was effusive in his praise for Bumrah in a recent interview, classifying the Indian speedster as unorthodox but highly effective and advising him to gradually progress to bowling at full tilt.
“Jasprit Bumrah is a wonderful bowler. Very, very different than any other fast bowler I have seen. Very, very unorthodox but highly effective. When you’re coming back from an injury after a long layoff, it’s always concerning for a bowler. Because you don’t want to get injured again and in the back of your mind. My advice to him would be to take it a little bit slowly,” Ambrose said in an interview with RevSportz.
“Don’t rush back into it or try to go flat out from Day 1. Obviously, he will love some practice sessions, play some games before but it is always important to take it on a slower basis, build up into it, and then when you’re really comfortable, then you can go flat out. But it’s not a wise thing to go flat out from ball one because, in the back of your mind, you don’t want to be hurt again.”
Indian players will be under tremendous pressure during World Cup 2023 but they have the ability to cope: Ambrose
India is all set to exclusively host an ODI World Cup for the first time. The tension is palpable as Indian fans are expecting Rohit Sharma and Co. to win the coveted silverware for the third time. Ambrose mentioned that the pressure of expectations will be immense on the players in every single game. However, the 59-year-old believes that the ‘Men in Blue’ have the ability to cope with the pressure.
“These players will be under tremendous pressure because they are playing at home and we all know how passionate Indians are when it comes to cricket. So, yes, the pressure will be there, but having watched these guys over a period of time, I believe they will cope well with the pressure. Well, they will have to, but I mean it’s not going to be easy for them. The expectation from the Indian supporters is going to be high and they will be under tremendous pressure every single game. But I believe they will cope and cope well.”
“Very very unorthodox and highly effective”- high regards for @Jaspritbumrah93 from the great @ambrose_curtly.
