You can't compare IPL with international cricket at all: Najmul Hossain Shanto

The ongoing season of the IPL 2024 (Indian Premier League) has been a run-fest, with many sides posting huge totals in the matches. The tournament has seen the record of the highest-ever total in an innings being broken several times. With the T20 World Cup 2024 rapidly approaching, many have come forward to opine that the run-fest could continue in the World Cup.

However, Bangladesh skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto has come forward and opined that the run-fest will not be continued in the T20 World Cup 2024. He revealed that the IPL and international cricket are not comparable. The 25-year-old took the example of PSL (Pakistan Super League) 2023, and how there were many matches where the 250-run mark was being broken, but according to Shanto, those scores are not easy to come by in international cricket.

“You can’t compare IPL with international cricket at all, I think even in last year’s PSL [Pakistan Super League], scores over 200 and even in excess of 250 were scored. But from my understanding, if a team makes over 160, around 175-180 or 200, that’s a very good score in international cricket. You don’t see such scores too often,” Shanto was quoted as saying by The Daily Star.

I think, we will see similar scores in the World Cup: Shanto

Furthermore, Najmul Hossain Shanto reflected on how teams will only be able to score 160–180 runs on good wickets in the World Cup and highlighted how any comparison with the IPL is illogical.

“I think, we will see similar scores in the World Cup, the scores will be around 160-180 on good wickets. The bowlers will have to defend those scores or teams would have to chase it. I don’t think a comparison with the IPL is logical in any way,” Shanto said.

Notably, Bangladesh will kick off their T20 World Cup campaign by taking on Sri Lanka. Both sides will lock horns in the 15th game of the tournament on Saturday, June 8.
