Rebounding from adversity and challenging phases can be particularly arduous, especially within the realm of sports. For Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya, the journey was all the more daunting, given the substantial criticism he faced following the unanticipated transfer of the Mumbai Indians captaincy from Rohit Sharma to him, plus his performances as well as MI’s run during IPL 2024.

Another challenge he encountered was contending with injuries and navigating his recovery process. Additionally, his performance in the IPL with the ball was lacklustre, as he managed to secure only 11 wickets across 12 innings, albeit at a steep economy rate of 10.75. This had raised several concerns about his fitness and the rationale behind his inclusion in the 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup 2024.

Despite facing adversity, Hardik has witnessed a significant turnaround in his fortunes, notably evident in his initial displays during the T20 World Cup 2024. Accumulating five wickets across two encounters against Ireland and Pakistan, he has exhibited gradual signs of reverting to his former self. Bowling coach of Team India, Paras Mhambrey, claimed that Hardik’s resurgence primarily stemmed from his profound understanding of his physique and bowling mechanics, coupled with his unwavering dedication and tireless work ethic. Consistent participation in bowling sessions bolstered Hardik’s confidence in his abilities, a sentiment Paras asserted was palpable in his on-field performances.

“Because he has done a lot of bowling, he has a lot of understanding about his bowling. So, he was sure that if his work ethic was going on, he was bowling in the nets regularly, then everything would fall in place. You can see what he’s doing as a bowler now,” shared Mhambrey as quoted by Hindustan Times.

The 51-year-old further noted that had Hardik not diligently worked on his bowling regimen and maintained his rigorous perseverance, there would have been greater cause for concern given his outing with the ball in the IPL. Further, he asserted that Hardik never compromised on his dedication, which ultimately restored his rhythm and effectiveness.

“Had he not worked on that, it would’ve been a little worrisome. But one thing was, for sure, that his work ethic was going on the same as before. So, if that is going on with him, then after one or two matches, the bowler finds the rhythm,” added Mhambrey.
