Team India finished the World Test Championship (WTC) 2021-23 cycle on top of the standings but came up short in the title decider. India, which last won an International Cricket Council (ICC) trophy in 2013, was hopeful of winning this year. But their desire to win an ICC title remained unfulfilled, as the Rohit Sharma-led side was defeated by Australia in the WTc final at The Oval in London on June 11, their second straight loss in the summit clash.
After winning the toss, Team India invited Pat Cummins and Co. to bat first. The Indian bowlers did disappoint, as Australia posted 469 in their first innings, courtesy of centuries from Travis Head and Steve Smith. Meanwhile, India could manage to score only 296 in their first innings.
In the second innings, Australia declared their innings to 270/8 on the fourth day of the one-off Test. India batters once again struggled with the bat as they were bowled out for 234 while chasing a 444-run target.
In the inaugural WTC final, India faced New Zealand in Southampton in 2021. India were bundled out for 217 and 170 in their two innings. The Black Caps, on the other hand, cruised to an eight-wicket win despite getting all-out for 249 in their first innings.
