Hosts India (IND) defeated Bangladesh (BAN) by 280 runs in the first Test of the two-match series at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The hosts had a turbulent start, as they were reduced to 34/3 but since then, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant stitched a crucial partnership of 62 runs. Later, Ravichandran Ashwin scored a century and Ravindra Jadeja made 86 runs as India posted 376 runs on board in the first innings.
In reply, Bangladesh were bundled out for just 149 runs. Ace pacer Jasprit Bumrah picked up four wickets while Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep and Jadeja picked up two wickets each. The Indian batters once again dominated in the third innings, as Pant and Shubman Gill scored a century each. Courtesy of their brilliance, India set a target of 515 runs in the final innings.
Bangladesh openers started well with the bat as openers Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam made 33 and 35 runs, respectively. Captain Najmul Hossain Shanto played a vital knock of 82 runs but had very little support from the other end. As a result, Bangladesh lost by a massive margin, which also put them in a difficult spot as far as the World Test Championship (WTC 2025) standing is concerned.
Ravichandran Ashwin, who had hit a century in the first innings and picked up six wickets in the second innings of the game was adjudged Player of the Match, which was his number 10th in red-ball cricket.
