The third Test between India and Australia at the Gabba, Brisbane, ended in a rain-affected draw, levelling the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024–25 series at 1-1. While rain dictated much of the Test match’s story, both teams put up great performances despite the weather interruptions.
The rain ultimately brought the game to a halt just 2.1 overs into India’s second innings on the final day, with ultimately officials deciding to end it in a draw. The hosts dominated for most of the game. Batting first, they set a strong first-inning score of 445, thanks to a brilliant 152 by Travis Head and Steven Smith’s 101. Jasprit Bumrah was the best tourist bowler, picking up six wickets for 76 runs in the first innings.
India’s response began poorly, with the top order struggling against Australia’s pace attack led by Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc. However, KL Rahul (84) and Ravindra Jadeja (77) fought back, rescuing the visitors from a tricky position. A fighting 47-run last-wicket stand between Bumrah and Akash Deep helped India avoid the follow-on, ending their innings at 260.
The final day saw Australia in a slightly poor position, securing a 185-run first-innings lead. They declared their second innings at 89/7 after just 18 overs. This approach gave India 54 overs to chase 275. However, rain and bad light ensured only 2.1 overs were bowled before play was abandoned. Meanwhile, after the game was drawn, veteran Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his international retirement and is set to fly back home on Thursday.
Australia, India witness a dip in PCT
The WTC points table (World Test Championship 2023-25) didn’t see any moment in the standings after the third Test between Australia and India ended in a draw in the rain-marred game. While the positions remain the same, both teams see a dip in their Points percentage (PCT), with Australia who are in the second spot having a PCT of 58.89%, and India who hold the third position with 55.88 %.
For India to qualify, they have to win each of the remaining Tests against Australia, and will see their PCT rise to 60.52. In that case, the Aussies will fall short of that mark even if they manage a 2–0 series win over Sri Lanka, scheduled to be played next year in January-February.
India can also finish above Australia with a win and a draw, only if Sri Lanka draw at least one of the two Tests they play at home against the reigning champions. If Rohit Sharma’s men lose one of the remaining two matches this series, the team then has to rely heavily on Sri Lanka to defeat the Pat Cummins-led side by a 2-0 margin.
