Delhi Capitals Women (DC-W) completed a hat-trick of wins in the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 with a 25-run victory over Gujarat Giants  Women (GG-W) in Match 10 on Sunday, March 3 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Being asked to bat first by Gujarat Captain Beth Mooney, Delhi posted a good score of 163/8 in their allotted 20 overs riding on captain Meg Lanning’s second half-century of the season.

In reply, Gujarat could only reach 138/8 in their allotted 20 overs with Ashleigh Gardner being the lone warrior with her innings of 40 (31). Their chase didn’t get off to a good start as they lost their opener Laura Wolvaardt (0 off 3) in the second over itself. Jess Jonassen further piled on the misery with her double strike in the fifth over. From there on, GG-W failed to recover as Grace Harris held one end while wickets kept on falling from the other.

Earlier in the day, after being put in to bat first, Delhi lost their opener Shafali Verma (13 off 9) in the third over. In-form Alex Capsey walked in at number 3 and played a good cameo of 27 off 17. However, she failed to continue her innings and got caught at point. Following her dismissal, captain Lanning took the innings forward with her brilliant half-century (55 off 41) before falling prey to Meghna Singh in the 13th over.

After the departure of Delhi skipper, Gujarat pulled things back and restricted DC to 163/8 in 20 overs with Ashleigh Gardner (2/37), Mannat Kashyap (1/16) and Tanuja Kanwar (1/31) among the wickets.

Here’s what the two captains and the Player of the Match said after the game:

Losing Captain, Beth Mooney, Gujarat Giants, said:

Disappointing, we’d have loved to be on the board, it was close in the end, but we needed a big partnership. Fair enough (on the fielding), the bowling has been disciplined, we let them down to be honest, not up to standards, we saw how well they fielded. You want to get off to a good start, but they bowled very well, not being three down in the batting powerplay, it could have been different. The batters haven’t been good enough, me included. It’s all about putting up the runs on the board going forward.

Winning Captain, Meg Lanning, Delhi Capitals said:

We felt short. We felt 20 short, particularly with the start we got ourselves. We felt it was a challenge to get early wickets and we did. I was a little bit frustrated to be fair in my first 30 runs, I would have liked to strike a bit more. something to work on for the upcoming games. Would have loved to carry on. It was great, Titas bowled excellently in her first game and Shikha is bowling well throughout. When it swings it’s dangerous and it can get good players out. You gotta keep winning throughout the tournament and it will be close in terms of the top 3. We will enjoy the win as that’s important and we will be looking forward to going to Delhi. Not too much time to think, which is good in a way. We head off tomorrow and play Tuesday night against a team who are in good form and it’s a great challenge for us. We will enjoy it.

Player of the Match, Jess Jonassen, Delhi Capitals said:

I have fortunately bowled a lot against them in the nets. They are quality players and they don’t give many opportunities. Our bowling group really came together. Radha also bowled well through the middle. Surprised I am up here (with the POTM award) but happy with the win. Meg knows me very well, she knows I love the ball in my hand at any point. I sort of pride myself on my ability to do that. The last 12-18 months have not been the way I wanted it to be, and nice that it looks like it is changing. Tonight, the wicket had a bit of sheen on it. The quicker you bowled, the easier it came on.
