Mumbai Indians’ clash with the UP Warrioz witnessed a moment of controversy after Mumbai Indians’ Hayley Matthews was given out by the third umpire in a controversial call. Sanity returned to the middle when the TV umpire realised his mistake and overturned the decision to make the right call.
The incident took place during Sophie Ecclestone’s first over when she challenged the on-field umpire’s call. The replays clearly showed that Hayley Matthews struck the ball before it hit her boot. However, the third umpire was shown a different part of the replay, which showed the ball hitting the boot first.
The third umpire overturned the on-field decision to hand UP Warriorz their first wicket of the match. But the Windies’ opener was going nowhere and was visibly shocked by the TV umpire’s decision. Thankfully, the third umpire realised his error and overturned the decision for one final time after reviewing the original replay, to hand the Women in Blue a deserved reprieve.
The UP based outfit did manage to get their first wicket after they got rid of the dangerous Yastika Bhatia. They also managed to get rid of her opening partner, legally this time, after Matthews top-edged a delivery from Eccelstone in the very next over. The two quick wickets brought the Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur to the middle along with the powerful Nat Sciver-Brunt.
