Gujarat Giants (GUJ-W) square off against Smriti Mandhana’s Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB-W) in match 6 of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) on March 8. The two sides have started their respective campaigns with two consecutive losses and would be looking to open their account on Wednesday. Despite the two teams appearing terrific on paper, the results have not quite backed the notion. Furthermore, as matches come thick and fast, the two teams will not only look for results in their favour, but also hope to win by a big margin considering their dismal net run-rate. Gujarat’s regular skipper Beth Mooney could get back to the squad after missing out the second match on account of injury. The two sides will lock horns at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai and will aim to end their losing streak.
Here is Gujarat Giants’ predicted XI for the match against Royal Challengers Bangalore –
Openers: Beth Mooney (c & wk), Sophia Dunkley
Skipper Beth Mooney has been sweating it out in the nets following an injury she endured in the first game against Mumbai Indians. After a sensational performance in the World Cup, Mooney had to leave the match early on March 4 after sustaining a leg injury. Having to sit out in the second game, Mooney will be desperate to set the stage on fire with her batting when she takes on RCB in the next game. With two losses in the first two games, Mooney will be raring to get her side back in the mix to fight for the title. Sophia Dunkley played her first match against UP Warriorz and was not quite impactful for the side on her WPL debut. However, Dunkley has a knack for understanding the dynamics of the game and would be raring to fight hard in the upcoming clash. Gujarat witnessed a top-order malfunctioning in both their games so far and will be looking to reverse it in the next match.
Middle Order: Harleen Deol, Dayalan Hemalatha, Sushma Verma, Sabbhineni Meghana
Harleen Deol top-scored for her side against UP Warriorz in their previous clash. The batter amassed 46 runs off 32 balls to help her team put 169 runs on the board. Considering that she is slowly getting back to form, the match against Bangalore could help attain her full potential with the bat. Sushma Verma got her first game in the previous match after Mooney was out due to the injury she picked up in the tournament opener. Despite being quite sharp behind the wickets, Sushma was not able to get the vital runs on the board. The keeper-batter will aim for a turnaround in the upcoming clash against RCB. Dayalan Hemalatha and Sabbhineni Meghana too have underperformed for the side with bat in their first two games. The duo will need to quickly bounce back and contribute with vital scores in the upcoming matches.
All-rounders: Ashleigh Gardner, Sneh Rana, Kim Garth
Star all-rounder Ash Gardner went for a lot of runs in their defeat against the Warriorz. However, she could prove to be crucial for the side against Smriti Mandhana and the rest of the Bangalore middle-order during the powerplay. Sneh Rana took over the leadership duties in their last outing and there is still a possibility for her to lead if Mooney remains out for the RCB clash. However, Rana has not yet had the kind of impact she would have hoped for. With not much room remaining for Gujarat to falter, the all-rounder will look to dent the rival side with her performances. Kim Garth made a stunning WPL debut against UP Warriorz on March 5. She single-handedly dented the rival batting unit with her five-wicket haul. It remains to be seen if she can carry her form to the next game.
Bowlers: Mansi Joshi, Tanuja Kanwar
Mansi Joshi and Tanuja Kanwar were relatively economical as compared to the other Gujarat bowlers in their last outing. However, the two have failed to hand the vital breakthroughs when required. They will hope to improve on this aspect and get the important breakthroughs which would be necessary especially during the crunch moments of the game. It will be important for this duo to show up with the ball if Gujarat is to remain alive in the competition. Bowling has been a weak spot in the Gujarat line-up as after being smashed for a 200+ score in their first outing, the team, despite Garth’s heroics, failed to defend 170 runs in the second match. Joshi and Kanwar would be looking to turn it around when they face Bangalore on Wednesday.
