Following the conclusion of the World Test Championship Final, England are set to host the newly crowned champions for a high-voltage Ashes series. While Ben Stokes will be leading a rejuvenated English team against the Aussies, former England skipper Eoin Morgan expressed his regret on never representing the team in the coveted series with a bold statement.
England’s former skipper Eoin Morgan revolutionised white-ball cricket in the country, leading the Three Lions to their first-ever ODI World Cup triumph in 2019. However, the influential figure still holds the regret of never being able to fulfil his potential in red-ball cricket, failing to represent England in the Ashes.
Morgan, who made his Test debut for England in 2010, did not feature in a red-ball game for England after 2012. Although he was part of the 2010-11 Ashes squad, he never got an opportunity in the starting eleven because of England’s formidable batting unit. The southpaw revealed that he would’ve even sacrificed his left arm just to play in the iconic series.
“I would have given my left arm to play in the Ashes. I went on the 2010/11 tour as the spare batter, but we had such a strong batting lineup. Every time I had an opportunity against the Aussies, particularly in 50-over cricket. I would go ‘well, this is the closest I’m getting to playing an Ashes against these guys. If that is where I want to be, then I need to do well here to start with,” Morgan told The Mirror.
The former England international, who will be on commentary duties during the upcoming Ashes, played 16 Tests for England during his time at the top level, amassing 700 runs with two centuries to his name. Morgan has also backed current Test skipper Ben Stokes to continue his relentless approach in the upcoming five-match series against arch-rivals Australia.
