After nine days of action-packed cricket, the 2024 edition of the Women’s Asia Cup culminated in the highly-anticipated final between Sri Lanka Women (SL-W) and India Women (IND-W) on July 28, at the illustrious Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium, in Dambulla.
Opting to bat first, India Women began with a moderate pace till the fifth over when a disastrous dropped catch by Harshitha Samarawickrama, who fumbled an easy sitter at cover, provided a crucial lifeline to the southpaw. Smriti Mandhana. Mandhana capitalized on this opportunity, adding 44 more runs to her tally and amassing a magnificent 60-run knock, her 26th T20I half-century. Swift and explosive contributions from Jemimah Rodrigues and Richa Ghosh propelled India Women to a formidable 165/6.
Left-arm orthodox, Sugandika Kumari, was the only one to maintain an economy rate below 6, conceding just one boundary, while all other bowlers endured considerable punishment.
Coming on to the chase, the hosts lost an early wicket via a bad mix-up between the openers which saw Vishmi Gunaratne being run out. However, an impressive 87-run partnership between Chamari Athapaththu and Harshitha Samarawickrama brought Sri Lanka Women within striking distance. They navigated the chase expertly, rendering the defending champions helpless on the field for the first time in the tournament.
A series of missed chances on the field, including dropped catches and a missed run-out opportunity, further exacerbated the situation. A costly 17-run 18th over secured the hosts’ first-ever victory in the competition, utterly dominating the match amidst a raucous crowd that went absolutely wild.
