Sanju Samson was one of the unfortunate cricketers to miss out on selection when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced their 15-member squad for the ODI World Cup 2023.
The Kerala cricketer was a part of the Indian setup as a traveling reserve during the Asia Cup 2023. However, his services weren’t required in the tournament, and he was sent back home ahead of the final, which India won by 10 wickets against Sri Lanka. The fans and a lot of former cricketers were astonished when Samson was not included in India’s World Cup squad. The fact that the 28-year-old averages 55.71 in the ODI format could have tilted the scales in his favour, but that didn’t turn out to be the case.
The Indian team recently went to Thiruvananthapuram, Samson’s hometown, to play a warm-up game against the Netherlands. There was a humongous poster of the wicketkeeper-batter where the ‘Men in Blue’ were practicing. The Rajasthan Royals captain shared a picture on Instagram, of the team practicing, with his poster in the background, and wrote: “With Team India @ God’s own country !!”.
