West Indies speedster Alzarri Joseph has been fined 25% of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the first ODI against Bangladesh in St. Kitts and Nevis on December 08. Joseph violated Article 2.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which relates to the use of an audible obscenity.

The breach occurred before the start of play when Joseph, responding to an umpire’s instruction not to step onto the pitch with his spikes, used offensive and abusive language. The fourth umpire, Gregory Brathwaite, reported the incident, leading to disciplinary action.

This is Joseph’s second offense in 24 months, earning him a demerit point alongside the fine. With the penalty accepted by Joseph without any contest, the matter was resolved without requiring a formal hearing. The decision was overseen by Jeff Crowe of the ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees, with charges brought by the on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Leslie Reifer, third umpire Asif Yaqoob, and Brathwaite.

Windies won the first ODI by five wickets

Level 1 breaches under the ICC Code of Conduct carry penalties ranging from an official reprimand to a fine of up to 50% of the player’s match fee, along with one or two demerit points. Despite the disciplinary setback, the hosts secured a five-wicket victory, breaking an 11-match losing streak against Bangladesh. Chasing a target of 295, the team saw some brilliant performances, with standout performances by Sherfane Rutherford and Shai Hope.

Rutherford’s maiden ODI century (113 off 80 balls) and Hope’s 88-ball 86 were crucial in the chase. The duo rebuilt the innings after an early collapse, while Justin Greaves’ unbeaten 41 off 31 balls provided the final touch.
