The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League started on 22nd March 2025. 19 matches have been played so far this season with every team playing at least three matches each. Only two weeks of IPL action has been completed so far and there are plenty of matches still left in the tournament. In the two weeks so far, some sections of fans believe it has not been able to evoke the kind of interest that it used to in previous editions. In this article, we look at three reasons why IPL is getting less interesting.
Here are the 3 reasons why IPL is getting boring day by day –
3. Lack of close matches and too many one-sided games

Out of the 19 matches played so far this season, around 15 of the games can be said to have been one-sided and lacked the ebbs and flows or twists and turns. Delhi Capitals against Lucknow Super Giants was the only memorable close game, where Delhi won the game in the last over in a thrilling chase. CSK losing against RR was another one that went down the wire, but apart from those two games, the rest of the matches have been very much one-sided.
Usually, fans want to see a competitive game with both sides throwing the punches and the result possibly going either way till the fag end of the innings. But so far this season, teams have either defended comfortably or chased easily, and there have been no coming-from-behind victories apart from the Delhi game against Lucknow. This could be one of the major reasons the IPL has been boring this season.

2. Lack of performance from superstar players

The IPL is known for its Superstar culture, and those are the players who bring a lot of fans to the stadium. Be it MS Dhoni, Rohit Sharma, or Virat Kohli, these are the players who attract eyeballs and have a lot of following due to their excellent records over the last decade. This season, players like MS Dhoni, Rohit, Pant, and some other big-name players have not been able to perform to their standards, which is one of the reasons why the excitement has been a bit less.
Regular Indian players, who are part of the current Indian squads, have not been able to light up the season as well. Be it Abhishek Sharma, Shivam Dube, Nitish Reddy, Tilak Varma, or Hardik Pandya, no one has scored a half-century this season so far. These players need to step up not only to improve their teams’ fortunes but also to make the game more entertaining.
1. Impact Player rule compromising the fairness of the game

The Impact Player rule allows teams to use either an extra batter or an extra bowler as a substitute. This means that virtually all teams are playing 12 vs 12 instead of 11 vs 11. This rule has meant that teams have deep batting, and the value of an all-rounder has diminished. This rule is only for IPL and is not applied in international cricket, so it takes away a certain element of fairness from the game. Suddenly, due to this rule, we saw plenty of high scores made last season, and there was no respite for bowlers.

While the rule has been interesting, it has messed up with a lot of combinations, and the relevance of the all-round balance of the sides has reduced. Another thing the Impact Rule has done is that some teams are now looking to score over 200 rather than assessing the conditions and judging a par score better. As a result, there have been fewer scores of more than 200 this season, and maybe the game can be equally thrilling to watch without the Impact Player rule.
