Suryakumar Yadav ascended to the Indian team’s T20I captaincy position right after Rohit Sharma retired from the shortest format. Since then, he has led India to 3-0 series wins against both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. But recently, the swashbuckling batter expressed his desire to make a comeback to the Test squad. It is worth noting that he played his only Test in February 2023 against Australia.

In the only Test he played in Nagpur, he was dismissed by Nathan Lyon for just eight runs. Since then, the right-handed batter is awaiting a call back from the team. As he is braced to lead the Indian side against South Africa in the latter’s home, the 34-year-old has displayed optimism over his potential comeback.

“When the time comes, I will make a Test comeback. I am playing all the domestic tournaments, be it red-ball or white-ball. I don’t miss any game. If that [Test comeback] has to happen, it will happen,” said Suryakumar as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.

Rohit Sharma’s character does not change irrespective of the result: Suryakumar

India were whitewashed at home by New Zealand in the recently concluded Test series. Rohit became the first captain to lose a series by 3-0 at home, and the veteran has been at the receiving end of immense flak. Suryakumar backed India’s Test and ODI captain and affirmed that the India opener is a strong character.

“In sports, winning and losing are common. Everyone works hard, everyone wants to win. For me, the most important thing in life is the balance. Whether he’s [Rohit] doing well or not, his character does not change. That is one quality which I feel a sportsman should always have,” Suryakumar added.
