His coaching stint in IPL and the Indian team has been particularly lucrative and successful. From 2015 to 2021, he was the head coach for India A and U19 teams, guiding the latter to victory in the 2018 ICC U-19 World Cup. His coaching acumen led to his appointment as the head coach of the senior Indian national team in 2022.
Under Dravid’s guidance, the Indian team has achieved remarkable success. Notable accomplishments include winning the 2023 Asia Cup and the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. The team also finished as runners-up in both the 2023 ICC World Test Championship and the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. Dravid will return to IPL as he has been recently appointed as the coach of his former team Rajasthan Royals.
“I am pleased to be returning to the franchise I have called ‘home’ for a number of years in the past. After the World Cup, I feel it’s the ideal time for me to take on another challenge, and the Royals is the perfect place to do that … It’s an exciting opportunity for us to take this team to the next level given the kind of talent and resources we have at our disposal and I’m looking forward to getting started,” Dravid said in a statement.
RR has not lifted the IPL title since the inaugural season in 2008; their next best finish was in 2022 when they ended as the runners-up. They failed to make the playoffs in 2023, finishing fifth in the league, but in the 2024 edition, they were knocked out in Qualifier 2. Dravid will work closely with Royals’ director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara and implement the franchise’s overall cricketing strategy.
