What is BCCI's criteria for selecting India's next head coach?

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) recently called for applications for the role of head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. The job is up for grabs for a term of three and a half years, starting July 1, and ending on December 31, 2027. Rahul Dravid’s current tenure concludes after the T20 World Cup, but he is eligible to re-apply for the position.

BCCI secretary Jay Shah had mentioned that even a foreign coach could be considered, pending a thorough interview process. Candidates need to meet all four specified criteria, in case an individual meets one criterion, he should be under 60 years old.

What is the minimum criteria to become Indian cricket team’s head coach?

1. The applicant should have played a minimum of 30 Test Matches or 50 ODIs for his/her national team.

Or

2. The applicant is/were a Head Coach of a full member Test Playing Nation, for a minimum period of 2 years.

Or

3. The applicant was a Head Coach of an Associate member, IPL Team or Equivalent International League/First Class Teams/ National A teams, for a minimum period of 3 years.

 Or

4. The applicant will have to acquire a BCCI Level 3 Certification or equivalent.

VVS Laxman frontrunner for high-profile job 

Amidst the absence of official announcements on the applicants, the most common name on social media for the head coach position is former India cricketer VVS Laxman. Laxman’s case stems from his role as the interim coach when Dravid was on leave during his tenure. The rumours reflect Laxman’s familiarity with the team dynamics and his potential to lead India.
