The second T20I of the five-match series between West Indies and India saw the hosts establish their dominance even further. After registering a four-run victory in the first T20I of the series, the Windies followed it up with an even more impressive performance in the second game, winning the match by two wickets and seven balls to spare to take a 2-0 lead.
The Indian team came in to bat first after winning the toss and could manage only a subpar start to the game as openers Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill were sent packing for 27 and seven runs, respectively. Furthermore, Suryakumar Yadav and Sanju Samson failed to make an impact as they were also dismissed cheaply.
As the Indian top order crumbled, it was the knock from youngster Tilak Varma that stabilized the innings. Playing just his second international game, Varma scored 51 runs in 41 deliveries, and with skipper Hardik Pandya’s late push of 24 runs in 18 deliveries, India posted 152 runs on the board in the first innings.
The Windies put forth an excellent performance with the ball, with Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph and Romario Shepherd taking two wickets each to limit the visitors to a reasonable total.
Nicholas Pooran’s blitzkrieg helps West Indies register second win
Aiming to chase 153, the Windies got off to a horrid start to the game as opener Brandon King bagged a duck while Johnson Charles was sent packing for just two runs as Pandya got two wickets in the opening over of the innings. Arshdeep Singh then dismissed Brandon King to leave West Indies three down for 32 by the fourth over.
After the top-order’s collapse, it was the brilliant knock of Nicholas Pooran that helped the West Indies win the second game. Pooran scored 67 off 40 with the help of six fours and four sixes. Meanwhile, skipper Rovman Powell (21 off 19) and Shimron Hetmyer 22 off 22) kept the hosts in the game.
Pandya got his third wicket when he dismissed Powell, while West Indies lost three wickets in the 16th over, with Yuzvendra Chahal dismissng Hetmyer and Jason Holder. However, Akeal Hossein (16 off 10) and Alazarri Joseph (10 off 8) remained unbeaten as Windies won by two wickets.
