Australia bounced back strongly in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 and registered a comprehensive 10-wicket victory in the second Test at the Adelaide Oval against Rohit Sharma-led India. This was Rohit’s fourth consecutive Test match defeat, which put him on an unwanted list alongside Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni.
Aakash Chopra lashed out at the Mumbai batter for his defensive captaincy Down Under. The former India cricketer opined that Rohit’s defensive captaincy allowed the match to drift away from the Asian giants. Chopra said that Rohit’s leadership exploits have been consistently disappointing over the last four Test matches.
Chopra specifically pointed out India’s plans on Day 2 of the pink-ball affair. Rohit had given Jasprit Bumrah only four overs in the morning session before taking him out of the attack. This allowed Australia to play aggressively and take a decisive 157-run lead in the first innings.
“Jasprit Bumrah had bowled a four-over spell and had already picked up a wicket in that. So why did he bowl only four overs, and didn’t bowl after that at all? He didn’t bowl in the entire session. So you are 100 per cent right when you say that you missed a trick in captaincy. Rohit’s captaincy – let’s call a spade a spade. We saw defensive captaincy. He allowed the match to drift,” Chopra said in a video on his official YouTube channel.
Chopra expressed his concerns over Rohit’s dismal returns as India’s Test captain. He recently became the first Indian skipper to suffer a 0-3 whitewash at home in a Test series when the Men in Blue were outplayed by New Zealand.
“He wasn’t the captain in the Perth match. So that win doesn’t count for him. If we leave the last century, it’s Dhoni, Kohli and Rohit, and the biggest concerning thing, which might not be with anyone else, is three consecutive losses at home. The captaincy has been a little lacklustre,” Chopra added.
The third Test between India and Australia will begin on Saturday, December 14, at the iconic Gabba in Brisbane.
