Star leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal wreaked havoc against Derbyshire in the ongoing County Championship Division II. Batting first, Northamptonshire made 219 runs, courtesy of Saif Zaib’s 90 and Justin Broad’s 45. Meanwhile, youngster Prithvi Shaw, who is also part of the Northamptonshire squad made just four runs in the first innings.

In reply, the David Llyod-led side was bundled for 165 runs. Luis Reece started well and hit a half-century but after that, it was all about Chahal. Batting at four, Wayne Madsen made 47 runs and was looking dangerous but Chahal picked up his wicket in the 56th over of the match. Ahead of that, he also picked up the wicket of Aneurin Donald.

The 34-year-old also went on to pick up the wickets of Zak Chappell, Alex Thomson and Jack Morley. Courtesy of his brilliant spell, Derbyshire managed a lead of 54 runs. Off-spinner Robert Keogh supported Yuzvendra Chahal well as he picked up three wickets.

Shaw once again struggled with the bat in the second innings. He made just two runs off eight deliveries before Harry Moore picked up his wicket. His opening partner Gus Miller started well and the hope now relies on his shoulders.

Chahal sends message to BCCI officials

Meanwhile, Chahal’s five-for is probably a message to BCCI officials and selectors who have not picked him for the ongoing Duleep Trophy. The spinner was part of India’s squad for the T20 World Cup but he didn’t play a single game in the tournament. After that, he wasn’t called up for the Zimbabwe series or the white-ball tour against Sri Lanka.

He is currently not in the scheme of things in any format and that’s not a good sign, given his success in white-ball cricket. The spinner previously expressed his desire to play red-ball cricket for India but that is very unlikely too, even after his five-for. Overall, Chahal has bowled in five innings so far in the competition and picked up six wickets at an average of 21.83.
