India had a blistering start to their second innings in the fifth Test between India and Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Day 2, courtesy of Yashasvi Jaiswal, who hit Mitchell Starc for four boundaries in the first over.
Jaiswal, India’s highest run-getter in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, backed himself and took some serious risks against the in-form pacer. However, the move paid dividends as India asserted dominance in their second innings from the get-go.
After shouldering arms of the first ball, Jaiswal threw the kitchen sink at the next delivery, which was short and wife outside off-stump. The ball went flying over the slip cordon for a boundary. The next ball was quite similar and Jaiswal responded the same way as he stood tall and slashed it away behind square on the off-side to register back-to-back bouncaries. The fourth ball of the over saw the southpaw playing a late cut that beat Nathan Lyon to his right at sweeper cover and went for another boundary.
Jaiswal went for another boundary off the fifth ball but the extra bounce disrupted his progress. The 23-year-old only connected with thin air. The Mumbai batter saved the best for the last as he hit a booming drive all along the carpet through extra cover for the fourth boundary in the over.

Jaiswal, Rahul depart after giving India quick start
Jaiswal’s partner KL Rahul also played a couple of gorgeous shots that went for boundaries before being dismissed by Scott Boland off a peach of a delivery. The Karnataka batter went for a drive but the ball took a tiny inside-edge before coming back onto the stumps. Boland also had Jaiswal’s number, disturbing his off stump coming from the around the wicket.

Jaiswal and Rahul added 42 runs off just 45 balls after India bowled out Australia for 181 in the second session. India will look to put on a big score in their second innings and put the hosts under all sorts of pressure.
