Former CEO of Kimberly-Clark Lever and a motivational speaker, Prakash Iyer shared a heartwarming moment from an interview on a Malayalam news channel. In an Instagram reel, Iyer mentioned that Indian cricket umpire K. N. Ananthapadmanabhan was once asked about his favourite cricketer. Without any hesitation, the umpire named the former New Zealand captain and legend, Kane Williamson.
When asked why the Kiwi cricketer was his favourite, the umpire explained that during Decision Review System (DRS) calls, umpires often have their decisions challenged. However, he mentioned that the Kiwi batter would politely express his intent to challenge the decision by saying that they would like to review it.
“When the DRS comes into play, there are often situations where the umpire’s verdict gets challenged, and the dreaded signal goes up when the opposing captain indicates they would like to take a review. But with Kane Williamson, when he wants to take a DRS, he turns to the umpire and says, ‘I am sorry, but we’d like to review that one,’” Ananthapadmanabhan said in the viral Instagram video.

This statement spoke volumes about the former New Zealand captain, as he challenged decisions with an apology. Iyer emphasised that everyone should take inspiration from the batter’s approach and make it a habit to use such words more often.
“Says so much about Kane Williamson, doesn’t it? He challenges the umpire but with an apology. He starts with an apology and says, ‘I am sorry.’ I think we can all take a leaf out of Kane Williamson’s book and learn to say those three words more often. ‘I am sorry.’ Even when you want to challenge somebody, it’s not a bad idea to start with that little apology. Just learning to say that, I think, can make our world a much better place,” Iyer concluded.
