Virat Kohli’s euphoric celebrations following India’s win in the finals of the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013 is still fresh in the memories of cricket enthusiasts. 11 years later, after India won another ICC event by beating South Africa in the finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup, Kohli led the celebrations as he indulged in bhangra alongside fellow Indian cricketers, Arshdeep Singh, Rinku Singh, and Mohammed Siraj.

Kohli had a forgettable campaign heading into the T20 World Cup final, as he had scored just 75 runs from seven innings at an average of 10.71. However, India skipper Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid had backed the legendary batter to come good in the summit clash. On Saturday, June 29, the former India captain showed his class and played a crucial knock of 76 off 59 balls. After the match, the Delhi batter wowed his fans with his impressive dance moves.

The Men in Blue posted 176/7 in their 20 overs after being reduced to 34/3 inside the powerplay. Kohli stitched half-century partnerships with Axar Patel and Shivam Dube to help his team set a challenging 177-run target for the Proteas.

In reply, South Africa got off to a disappointing start, losing Reeza Hendricks and captain Aiden Markram inside the first three overs. However, three impressive partnerships featuring Quinton de Kock, Tristan Stubbs, Heinrich Klaasen, and David Miller helped the Rainbow Nation get things under control. At one stage, South Africa were cruising at 151/4 at the end of the 16th over, requiring just 26 off the last four. However, Hardik Pandya dismissed Klaasen off the first ball of the 17th over to open the floodgates. Eventually, the Proteas were restricted to 169/8 to give India their second T20 World Cup title.

Virat Kohli announces retirement from T20I cricket

The 35-year-old announced his retirement from T20I cricket after collecting his Player of the Final award. He said that it was time for the next generation of Indian players to take the nation forward in the shortest format of the game.

“This was my last T20 game playing for India. We wanted to lift that cup. [if he is confirming if this was his last T20I] Yes I have, this was an open secret. Wasn’t something that I was not going to announce even if we had lost. Time for the next generation to take the T20 game forward and do wonders as we have seen them do in the IPL. I have no doubts that they will keep the flag waving high and take this team further from here now,” the talismanic batter told Harsha Bhogle while speaking after the match.
