After putting on a huge first innings score in the second Test match against Bangladesh at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram, South Africa got off to an abysmal start with the ball as they conceded 10 runs off the first ball on Wednesday, October 30.

Spin-bowling all-rounder Senuran Muthusamy scored an exhilarating half-century on Day 2 but he got his team penalised for running straight down the pitch during his knock. After South Africa declared at 575/6, Bangladesh started their innings at 5/0 as a result of the five-run penalty handed to their opponents.

Kagiso Rabada bowled a decent first delivery that shaped away nicely from the left-handed Shadman Islam, who allowed it to go through to the wicketkeeper. However, the South African spearhead lost his radar on the second delivery as he slipped one way down the leg-side, as Kyle Verreynne’s full-stretch dive couldn’t stop the ball. The ball raced to the boundary and to make matters worse, Rabada had overstepped, helping the hosts reach 10 runs, just one delivery into their innings.

10 runs after 1 delivery without bat hitting ball: Have you ever seen this before?! 😮#ICYMI: South Africa were penalised 5 runs earlier for Muthuswamy running straight down the pitch, making Bangladesh start their innings at 5/0.#BANvSAonFanCode

South Africa continue to dominate proceedings on Day 2

Tony de Zorzi and David Bedingham started the day for South Africa at a commanding position of 307/2. The latter scored a fluent 59 off 78 balls before being dismissed. De Zorzi also fell a couple of overs later for a career-high 177 off 269 deliveries. Ryan Rickelton and Verreynne also fell in quick succession as South Africa went from 386/2 to 423/6.

Bangladesh would have hoped to bowl out the tourists between 450-480 but Wiaan Mulder and Muthusamy had other ideas. They stitched a stunning 152-run partnership off 186 balls to thwart the Bangladeshi bowlers. Mulder remained unbeaten on 105 off 150 balls, while Muthusamy stayed not out on 68 off 75 deliveries.

After the horrendous start with the ball, Rabada bounced back in style as he dismissed Shadman off the fifth ball of the first over. The right-arm pacer picked up his second wicket in his third over, as he got the better of Zakir Hasan. South African spin duo Dane Paterson and Keshav Maharaj also joined the party, as they got rid of Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Hasan Mahmud, respectively.

Bangladesh ended Day 2 at 38/4, still trailing South Africa’s first-inning score by 537 runs. Mominul Haque and captain Najmul Hossain Shanto remained unbeaten at Stumps. Bangladesh’s first target should be to score another 338 runs to have South Africa bat again in the Test match.
