During the second Test between India and Australia at Adelaide Oval on Friday, Shubman Gill responded to Mitchell Starc’s early onslaught with a brilliant counter-attack in the first over of the Pink-ball encounter. The match was full of emotions for the visitors, who were returning to the ground where they suffered their infamous 36-all-out collapse during the 2020/21 tour.

Captain Rohit Sharma who returned to the Plying XI decided to bat first on a gloomy afternoon. Gill also returned to the lineup after missing the first Test due to a fractured thumb. Starc’s opening burst was exceptional as he dismissed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal on the first ball of the game, making it his third time to dismiss a batter on the first ball of a Test match.

Despite the early wicket, Gill remained calm and after showing respect to Starc’s pace and swing in the first two balls, counterattacked with two consecutive boundaries. Earlier he cut past the gully with a beautiful shot, then drove elegantly straight of mid-off.  Moreover, Gill who returned from an injury looked comfortable in a recent warm-up match against Prime Minister’s XI at Canberra, where he remained unbeaten and scored a fifty.

Meanwhile, opener KL Rahul received a lifeline earlier in the game when he hadn’t opened his account. In the eighth over, Scott Boland struck on his first ball of the game, which got Rahul’s edge, and the on-field umpire signaled out, prompting the right-hander to walk back. However, while Rahul was walking back to the dressing room, the third umpire called it a no-ball, which led to the batter continuing his innings.

At the time of writing India’s score stands at 56/1 after 16 overs, with Gill batting on 28 of 47 deliveries and has already struck five boundaries. On the other end, Rahul is batting at 26 after facing 50 deliveries.
