Rohit Sharma‘s struggles with the bat in the longest format continued on Tuesday, December 17, as he was dismissed for 10 by Pat Cummins in the seventh over on Day 4 at the iconic Gabba in Brisbane.

The Australian skipper bowled a delivery outside off-stump and on a good length, inducing a drive from his opposite number. However, Rohit didn’t move his feet towards the delivery and tried to play with his hands, relying on hand-eye coordination. The probing delivery took a thin edge that went straight through to wicketkeeper Alex Carey, who didn’t need a second invitation behind the stumps.

Earlier in the day, Rohit hit a couple of boundaries, the second being a streaky inside edge past the leg stump off Mitchell Starc’s bowling. The Mumbai batter only lasted 27 balls before his knock came to an abrupt end.

This was another addition to Rohit’s lackluster scores in the 2024-25 season for the Indian team in Test cricket. His average dropped to 11.69 after the dismissal. After missing the first Test as he was on paternity leave, Rohit got dismissed for three and six in the two innings in the second Test in Adelaide. The 37-year-old would have hoped for a strong show in the River City but that wasn’t to be.

India lost half their side at the fall of Rohit’s wicket. When the veteran was dismissed, the tourists had only 74 runs on the board. This was after Rohit and KL Rahul stitched a gritty 30-run partnership. The latter could have been dismissed for 33 off the first ball on Day 4. However, Steve Smith dropped a regular chance off Cummins as Rahul lived to fight on.

Rahul went on to notch up his 17 Test half-century. While the Karnataka batter continued his stay at the crease, he will look for help from the other end to guide India to avoid the follow-on.
