The 37th match of the ongoing Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 match between Bangladesh and Nepal was not just only about the intense cricketing action. A controversial moment occurred when Bangladesh’s Jaker Ali appeared to consult the dressing room before helping Tanzim Hasan Sakib to take a very late review after the latter was adjudged out lbw off Sandeep Lamichhane.
The controversial incident occurred in the 14th over of Bangladesh’s innings. Lamichhane struck Tanzim on the pads and the umpire raised his finger to rule the batter out. As he began walking off, non-striker Jaker Ali was caught on camera appearing to look towards the Bangladesh dressing room.
He then gestured to his partner to review the decision just as the DRS timer was about to expire. Replays showed the ball missing leg stump, overturning the on-field call. Tanzim’s reprieve didn’t last long, as the 21-year-old was dismissed by Lamichhane’s googly on the very next delivery.

According to Article 3.2.3 of the tournament’s playing conditions, umpires can decline a review if they believe the players received input from off the field, particularly in the dressing room.
Article 2.15 of the ICC’s Code of Conduct also prohibits players from seeking off-field assistance to decide on a review, with potential penalties including suspensions. While the umpires didn’t object to the review during the match, Ali and Tanzim could face charges of committing a Level 3 offence if found guilty of the alleged breach.
Miser spells help Bangladesh’s cause
The Bangla Tigers secured a hard-fought 21-run victory over Nepal at the Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown on Monday to confirm their Super Eights berth. Chasing 107 for victory, Nepal were reeling at 26/5 before a 52-run partnership between Kushal Malla and Dipendra Singh Airee revived their hopes.

However, Mustafizur Rahman’s three wickets and Tanzim’s four-wicket haul put the match back in Bangladesh’s favoor. With 22 needed off the final over, Shakib Al Hasan claimed two wickets to seal the win.
The Najmul Hossain Shanto-led side will now focus on making the most of the Super Eight stage and advancing to the tournament’s final round. Placed in Group 1, their first challenge will be against the 2021 edition champions Australia on June 21, followed by India and Afghanistan.
