Scott Boland had KL Rahul in his first ball in the Day-Night Test in Adelaide. The ball bounced well and was nipping away and was very close to Rahul’s bat. The Australian team appealed hard and the on-field umpire interestingly raised his finger and after which, Rahul was on his way back to the pavilion. However, the third umpire called a front-foot no-ball, which saved the India opener in Adelaide.

Later, on replay, it was revealed that the ball didn’t touch Rahul’s bat but the batter failed to understand that as he didn’t opt for a review and was on his way back to the pavilion. Virat Kohli was also close to the boundary ropes waiting to come in but ultimately, it was the no-ball that saved Rahul in the middle.

In the same over, the 32-year-old was dropped in the slips. He edged Boland but Usman Khawaja, who was stationed in the first slip, failed to grab it after a dive to his right. It wasn’t a regular slip catch but had Khawaja dived a second ago, he would have been able to grab the ball. With that, Rahul survived twice in the same over.

India had already lost the wicket of Yashasvi Jaiswal in the first ball of the game and another quick wicket would have put the visitors in trouble. Rahul however managed to get past a slashed one for a boundary in the next over itself. He should take confidence from that and build a good partnership with Shubman Gill, who looked in sublime touch at the other end.

Apart from Gill, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin have also returned to the playing XI. The India captain missed the Perth Test due to the birth of his son, while Ashwin was out for tactical reasons. Rohit replaced Jurel in the playing XI while the off-spinner has a terrific record in Pink Ball Tests and came in place of Washington Sundar.
