Marnus Labuschagne, primarily as a specialist batter for Australia, has been making a notable impact with the ball, particularly in the ongoing Vitality T20 Blast 2024. Glamorgan have increasingly relied on him as a bowler, and he has delivered a significant number of overs in recent matches.

However, he delivered his best bowling performance in the last league-stage South Group match against Somerset. Despite initially being hit for a couple of boundaries by and Lewis Gregory and Ben Green, he made a resolute comeback by dismissing both players on the last ball of his first over and the first ball of his second over, respectively.

Labuschagne’s first wicket was likely due to a stroke of luck, as Green pulled a half-tracker directly to deep mid-wicket. There, Thomas Bevan sprawled across the outfield and executed a full-stretch dive to secure an extraordinary grab. In fact, his second over proved even more eventful and lethal for Somerset, as it featured two additional wickets and culminated in a maiden over, significantly halting their momentum.

The innings were concluded in Labuschagne’s third over when he delivered a flat, low ball that slipped under Jake Ball’s unsuccessful cut shot, outpacing him and securing Labuschagne’s first five-wicket haul in professional cricket.

Earlier in the day, opener, Kiran Carlson, dominated the bowlers, scoring his debut T20 hundred with a magnificent 135 off 64 balls, featuring 14 fours and eight sixes.

Labuschagne has also been remarkably economical throughout the tournament, maintaining an impressive economy rate of just 7.87 runs per over, an extraordinary feat for a player who doesn’t really get to bowl otherwise.
