Wicket-keeper Ishan Kishan showed his value behind the stumps during the first unofficial Test between India A and Australia A, in Mackay. The experienced wicketkeeper-batter, currently working his way back into the national team, proved instrumental in helping the visitors’ bowling efforts, particularly in the dismissal of Australian opener, Marcus Harris.

During a crucial phase of play on Day 3, Kishan was observed providing valuable insights to left-arm spinner Manav Suthar while dealing with Harris. The keeper noted the Australian batter was frequently stepping out of his crease, and suggested an adjustment to Suthar, guiding him to bowl a straighter delivery to catch Harris off-guard.

“I promise you bowl a straighter one he will definitely get an edge,” Kishan was heard encouraging Suthar.

His prediction was correct when Marcus Harris, facing a delivery in the 30th over, edged the ball while attempting a forward defensive shot. Kishan’s sharp reflexes behind the stumps ensured the chance wasn’t missed, as he completed a clean catch to dismiss Harris for 36.

Australia A need 86 runs to win the unofficial Test

The explosive wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has faced significant challenges recently, including losing his spot in the Indian senior team and his BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) central contract. His absence from domestic cricket in favour of IPL preparations led to his omission from the central contracts list, while his departure midway through the South Africa tour in 2023 for personal reasons further complicated his standing with the board.

Despite Kishan’s contributions, Australia A maintained the upper hand in the match, reaching 139 for three at stumps with Captain Nathan McSweeney (47*) and Beau Webster (19*) at the crease. The visitors require 86 more runs for victory, having built a solid platform with an unbroken 54-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

India’s second innings total of 312 saw a significant improvement from their first innings collapse of 107, but Australia A’s chase has put them in a strong position to secure victory in this unofficial Test.
