Pacer Mohammed Shami copped a blow to the right side of his back off the penultimate delivery of the first innings of the Champions Trophy 2025 clash between India and New Zealand, being held in Dubai, on Sunday, March 2.

At the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Shami was desperately trying to add as many runs as possible in the last over after India’s top-order failed to deliver. The Bengal seamer hit a delivery down the ground and scampered back for the second run. Kuldeep Yadav was running towards the danger end but he was in a better position to make the crease first.

New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner gathered the ball and threw it to the striker’s end. However, the throw was a bit wayward and it hit Shami’s back as he was looking to complete the second run. The 34-year-old took a pause as he seemed to be in a decent amount of pain. The physios came out to check on the veteran as tensed Indian fans. However, Shami recovered quickly and took guard to face the last ball.

He tried to hit the ball out of the park to help India finish on a high. However, he failed to establish a proper connection on his slog and the ball was safely grabbed by Glenn Phillips, who had another fine day in the field.

Mohammed Shami starts with new ball

Shami seemed to be in no real discomfort as he bowled the first over in New Zealand’s innings. He targeted the stumps, making Will Young play all six deliveries. Apart from the second delivery, which went for a boundary down to fine-leg, others were dot balls. However, he was seen taking a massage on the area where he took the blow when he was fielding in the deep in the second over.

Earlier in the day, India were restricted to 249/9 in their 50 overs by New Zealand, who were excellent with the ball and in the field. Matt Henry bagged a five-for, conceding 42 runs in eight overs. For India, Shreyas Iyer top-scored with a 98-ball 79. Axar Patel (42) and Hardik Pandya (45) also played handy knocks to help India recover from a disappointing start.
