The opening day of the fifth and final Test in Sydney ended in a dramatic fashion as India’s skipper Jasprit Bumrah dismissed Usman Khawaja on the last ball of the day. Just as he picked the wicket, the pacer had a fiery stare at Australia’s opener Sam Konstas.
India, trailing the series 1-2, entered the Sydney Test with a point to prove. Stand-in skipper Bumrah led the side as Rohit Sharma rested for the New Year’s Test. The day began with India being bowled out for 185, thanks to a stellar performance by Scott Boland, who picked up four wickets. Rishabh Pant’s 40 was the only valuable knock. With Australia beginning their innings under the lights, India needed a breakthrough to end the day on a positive note.
Ahead of the penultimate ball of the final over of the day, Khawaja paused Bumrah mid run-up, leaving the pacer visibly irritated. Moments later, 19-year-old Sam Konstas, joined the incident with a heated exchange with Bumrah. The interaction prompted the on-field umpire to intervene to diffuse the situation.
On the final ball of the over, he bowled a fuller-length delivery that took the outside edge of Khawaja’s bat, as KL Rahul completed the catch at second slip. The Indian team jumped broke into a wild celebration, but Bumrah’s reaction grabbed significant attention as the veteran pacer turned towards Konstas and gave him a stare.
