WATCH: Akash Deep’s inswinger Tom Latham’s stumps, pacer gives aggressive send-off

Pacer Akash Deep picked up the wicket of New Zealand captain Tom Latham in the first over of the third innings. Just the previous ball before the dismissal, Akash’s inswinging one had hit Latham on the pads, which umpire Michael Gough ruled as lbw. However, Latham was quick to challenge the decision and survive as the ball had hit his bat first. However, on the very next ball, Akash breached the opener’s defense and broke the stumps.

The ball nipped back late from outside off and snuck in right between the bat and the pad as Latham failed to get any bat on it, with the ball going on to crush the timber. Akash was elated following the dismissal as he celebrated by pumping his fist in front of the batter.

India manages a 28-run lead in the first innings

Shubman Gill was the star with the bat for India in the first innings with a crucial knock of 90 runs as India registered 263 runs in response to New Zealand’s 235. Day 1 ended on a rough note for the hosts as they lost three crucial wickets of Rohit Sharma, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Virat Kohli in no time. Mohammed Siraj, who was promoted as a night watchman, also registered a golden duck as India was in all sorts of trouble.

However, Gill took control on Day 2 and played a vital knock to rescue the team alongside Rishabh Pant, who played an equally important knock, scoring 60 off 59. Even though India was in a tough spot, the keeper-batter decided to play an aggressive brand of cricket to put the pressure back on the Kiwis.

After his dismissal, Gill got little support from the other end before Ajaz Patel got the better of him. Towards the end, Washington Sundar played some excellent shots to remain unbeaten for 38 off 36.
