Wasim Jaffer highlights loophole in dead ball law that cost Bangladesh game against South Africa

Bangladesh took on South Africa in Match 21 of the T20 World Cup 2024 at the Nassau County Stadium in New York on Monday, June 10. Bangladesh managed to contain South Africa to 113 runs but failed to create the same magic during their chase. None of the batters stepped up to the occasion apart from Towhid Hridoy and Mahmudullah. As a result, the Tigers fell short of four runs in a closely fought game.

One particular aspect of the game was highlighted by former Indian cricketer, Wasim Jaffer. When Mahmudullah was batting in the 17th over, Ottneil Baartman bowled a fuller delivery that deflected off the pads and went towards the fence, eventually crossing it. The Proteas appealed for a LBW and it was given out. Mahmudullah reviewed the decision which was overturned. However, as per the laws the four runs for byes were not counted. Ironically, Bangladesh lost the game by four runs.

“Mahmudullah was wrongly given out LBW, the ball went for four leg byes. The decision was reversed on DRS. Bangladesh didn’t get the 4 runs as ball is dead once batter given out, even if wrongly. And SA ended up winning the game by 4 runs. Feel for Bangladesh fans. #SAvBAN #T20WC,” wrote Jaffer on his ‘X’ post.

Even former Pakistan fast bowler Waqar Younis came forward to highlight the same on X. Here’s his tweet –

We were bit nervous but we were confident we could get over the line: Shanto

Bangladesh were coming off a series loss against the United States of America ahead of the T20 World Cup 2024. While they were termed as underdogs, they proved the critics wrong with an emphatic win against Sri Lanka in their first game. Though they lost the subsequent game against South Africa, the Tigers still can fill the Super 8 berth with wins against Netherlands and Nepal. Najmul Shanto highlighted that the team has struggled for a leg spinner for more than a decade.

“We were bit nervous but we were confident we could get over the line but unfortunately it did not happen. (Tanzim Hasan) He worked really hard last couple of days, we wanted wickets with the new ball and he showed character today. This is the match we should have won, last couple of overs they bowled really well. It can happen in cricket,” said Shanto in the post-match presentation.

“(Rishad) He is very good, the way we bowled last couple of series, he practiced very hard. We’ve struggled with leg-spinners over the last 10-15 yrs so we’re lucky we got one. Hopefully he can continue. Thanks to all the supporters, hopefully they’ll come to the West Indies as well,” he added.
