Virat will play for some time, as far as Rohit is concerned, it’s a call: Ravi Shastri (Photo Source: Star Sports, Cricket Aus)
Senior India batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma have had a tough time so far in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy. The India captain has made only 31 runs in three matches at an average of 6.20 and is now on the verge of losing his spot in Test cricket. Kohli, on the other hand, had a fantastic start to the series, scoring a century in Perth but since then, the 36-year-old failed to live up to the expectations.
The star batter was trapped outside off-stump time and again and that’s a huge concern for team India as it has bothered the Delhi-born in white-ball cricket as well. Rohit meanwhile lacked confidence and the same was seen in his captaincy. Former cricketer Ravi Shastri, who was also the head coach of the Indian team when they played in Down Under in 2021, noted that the team management and the selectors will have to take a call about Rohit but he expects Kohli to play at least three or four years.
“I think Virat will play for some time. Forget the way he got out, or whatever. I think he’ll play for another three or four years. As far as Rohit is concerned, it’s a call. At the top of the order, you know, just feel the footwork isn’t the same. He’s probably at times, late in meeting the ball so it’s his call at the end of the series,” Shastri said on Star Sports.

Ahead of the series against Australia, reports claimed that the tour will be vital for the senior cricketers as selectors will take a call on their future. Ravichandran Ashwin retired from international cricket after the third Test at Gabba and the form of Rohit and Virat aren’t good either.
In case the team fails to qualify for the World Test Championship finale, it won’t be surprising if the selectors take a bold step. However, a lot will depend on how India fare in the ongoing series. If the visitors manage to win the series against Australia, the conversations are expected to get postponed.
