Virat Kohli won’t be made Test captain, and maybe that’s the right thing: Aakash Chopra

Virat Kohli has been in the eye of the Indian cricket team’s well-wishers for his return as Test team skipper, especially after the Men in Blue’s disappointing outing in the 2023 World Test Championship (WTC) final. Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has clearly rejected all the speculation of Kohli leading team India again.

Indian cricket fans on social media have been raising their voices in favour of either Ravichandran Ashwin or Virat to replace Rohit Sharma as captain in the longest format of the game, but as Chopra stated, after Kohli himself stepped down as Test captain, it is unlikely that the 34-year-old will return for new WTC cycle as skipper.

Chopra thinks Virat Kohli will not be appointed skipper again by BCCI

“He can be made but he won’t be and maybe that’s the right thing as well because no one asked him to leave Test captaincy. This thing has been cleared multiple times from different quarters that no one said that he won’t remain the Test captain,” said the former Indian Test opener on his YouTube channel.

Virat stepped down from India’s Test captaincy role after the 2022 South Africa tour, as the side lost the Test series 2-1. Kohli was clearly one of the most successful Indian Test captains; under his leadership, team India won 40 matches in 68 Tests. But later on, Kohli’s captaincy saga seemed to be a rift between him and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

“In fact, when he took this decision that he won’t remain the captain, the BCCI was taken aback slightly that what really happened, that they will have to search for a captain. So that was a slightly different thing, but not now,” Chopra further added.

All these discussions on Test captaincy have been the result of team India’s failure in the WTC 2023 final against Australia, as Pat Cummins-led side defeated the Asian side by a margin of 209 runs; it will interesting to see how things unfold in the future as Rohit will be seen again leading the team in whites for the West Indies tour.
