Rising spin sensation Varun Chakravarthy resulted in a needless boundary being conceded during India’s (IND) ongoing Champions Trophy 2025 clash against New Zealand (NZ) in Dubai, on Sunday, March 2. The peculiar moment unfolded during the fourth over of New Zealand’s run-chase in Match 12 of the marquee event.
The mystery spinner, stationed at mid-on, was at the receiving end. The second delivery of Hardik Pandya’s second over had to be re-bowled due to the pace-bowling all-rounder overstepping. The free-hit delivery was toe-ended by Will Young towards the mid-on region, on the left side of Chakravarthy.
Varun Chakravarthy ran backwards in a bid to get hold of the ball, which was not quite needed. The ball touched his fingertips and raced ahead. Thereafter, it ricocheted off Chakravarthy’s leg and ended up going all the way to the fence.
Even Shubman Gill who was closing in from mid-off failed to stop the ball from trickling over the boundary. This particular incident left Hardik as well as the seasoned Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in utter disbelief at the flow of events which had gone down.

Iyer, Hardik steer India to 249 in first innings
Speaking about Team India’s batting innings after being sent in by New Zealand, it got off to quite a horrid start. The top-order was blown away by the seventh over, with all of Rohit, Gill, and Virat departing without contributing much to the scoreboard. The Indian side found themselves in a challenging position at that stage.
However, it was Shreyas Iyer and Axar Patel who steadied the ship for India thereafter. Despite Axar departing in the 30th over, Iyer carried on to register his 22nd half-century. Hardik started off slow but gradually picked up to garner a run-a-ball 45 to his name to lead India to a score of 249/9 in 50 overs.
