Team India had another forgetful year in 2023 as they once again failed to end their ten-year-long ICC Trophy drought losing consecutive finals in the year. The Rohit Sharma-led side first lost the World Test Championship 2023 final against Australia by 209 runs and was later stunned by the same opposition in the ODI World Cup 2023 final in Ahmedabad losing by six wickets.

The loss in the World Cup final marked India’s ninth failure to win an ICC Trophy after qualifying for the knockout stages of the tournament in the last ten years. Frustrated by India’s continuous faltering in the knockout stages, a fan asked former India bowler Venkatesh Prasad if they have become the new chokers of World Cricket.

Replying to the fan, Prasad acknowledged that there’s something not right about not winning any major trophy for quite some time but also mentioned India’s two Test series victories in Australia calling 2020-21 as one of their greatest.

“Chokers not, we have won 2 Test series against Australia in Australia, the last one in 2020-21 after 36 all out, I consider as one of India’s greatest especially with more than half first choice players missing. But there is certainly something not right about not winning any major tournament in 11 years,” Prasad wrote in reply.

India last won an ICC Trophy in 2013

Notably, India haven’t won an ICC Trophy ever since their Champions Trophy 2013 triumph in England under the leadership of MS Dhoni. Since then, the Asian giants have reached the finals of five ICC tournaments and semi-finals of four but still a silverware has eluded them.

The only instance when the Men in Blue failed to qualify for the knockouts in the past ten years was during the 2021 T20 World Cup under the leadership of Virat Kohli.

Meanwhile, with the T20 World Cup 2024 scheduled to take place in June in the USA and West Indies, all eyes will be once again on the Indian side to see if they can finally break their knockout jinx.
