Australia won the fifth Test comprehensively and also the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 by a 3-1 margin to clinch the title after a decade’s wait. On Day 3, India could provide a target of just 162 runs and Australia, despite early hiccups, managed to seal the victory with six wickets remaining. With this loss, India are now officially out of the World Test Championship 2025 finals.

Pat Cummins, who was having a spectacular 2024 as a captain, has started 2025 on a high note. After the series win, the pacer expressed the feeling as “unreal”, admitting how proud he is of the effort that the hosts put in.

“Unreal. This was one that a few of us didn’t have It’s been an amazing series. [We’re] immensely proud. We’ve spent a lot of time together as a group over the years, so we knew we weren’t at our best at Perth, but it was never as bad as it seems. So you stick tight and double down on what makes us a really good side,” Cummins said at the post-series presentation.

“It’s been such a special group. Feel so privileged to first of all have this job. But what we’ve been able to achieve together alongside the support staff as well, it’s such a group effort, families as well. They give up so much. So yeah, really proud with what we’ve been able to achieve,” he added.

Cummins was also effusive in praise for debutants Sam Konstas and Beau Webster. “We always talk about needing a squad, especially in these five Test match series you’re rarely going to play the same XI and three debutants across series all came in, fitted in really well, and contributed at different times. Beau in his debut match this game as well, I thought was fantastic. So yeah, it feels like we’re building something nice.”

Speaking of his own performance after ending the series with 25 wickets at an average of 21.36 and scoring 159 runs at 19.87, Cummins said that he was “pretty happy” how things went by.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 was created many records one of which was the crowd attendance in the Boxing Day Test at the MCG. The series lived up to its hype and Cummins did not shy away from mentioning the euphoria. He also credited the senior players in the team for their contribution and revealed that this series was is his “most favourite Test series”.

“These are the big series you prepare for. Some keen moments when our main stays really stood up. You need to do that to beat a side like India. Our guys put their hands up. Would go down one of my most favourite Test series. Thanks to Rohit and Jasprit. The fans made the series. Every venue was incredible. MCG was off its head. Three sell outs in three days here at Sydney. Shows why Test cricket is so special and why we love playing it so much. Seeing everyone turning out in pink and celebrating an amazing cause is a great way to kick start the year,” Cummins added.
