13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi hogged the limelight as India beat Sri Lanka comprehensively in the Under-19 Asia Cup 2024 semi-final clash at the iconic Sharjah Cricket Stadium on Friday, December 6. The Boys in Blue emerged victorious by seven wickets with 28.2 overs to spare.
Sri Lankan captain Vihas Thewmika won the toss and opted to bat first in the knockout fixture. However, they lost three out of their top four batters inside four overs, with just eight runs on the board. Sharujan Shanmuganath stitched a crucial 93-run partnership with Lakvin Abeysinghe to steady the ship. Ayush Mhatre broke the stand by taking the wicket of Sharujan for 42.
Abeysinghe held the fort from one end even as he saw his teammates getting dismissed at regular intervals. The right-handed batter was eventually dismissed for a 110-ball 69 after hitting three fours and two sixes. Kiran Chormale provided the important breakthrough in the 44th over. The tailenders couldn’t contribute much with the bat as Sri Lanka were bowled out for 173 in 46.2 overs. Rajasthan speedster Chetan Sharma was the pick of the bowlers for India as he finished with excellent figures of 3/34 in eight overs. Meanwhile, Mhatre and Chormale bagged two wickets apiece. Yudhajit Guha and Hardik Raj had one wicket each to show for their efforts.

Chasing the paltry total, India got off to a blistering start as Suryavanshi set the tone in the second over itself, taking Dulnith Sigera to the cleaners. The Rajasthan Royals batter smashed three sixes and one boundary, while five wides and four byes came as bonus runs for the Indian team. A whopping 31 runs came off this over.
Suryavanshi added an entertaining 91-run stand inside nine overs with Mhatre before the latter was dismissed for a 28-ball 34. However, this didn’t slow down the southpaw as he played a breathtaking knock of 67 off 36 balls, belting six fours and five sixes. India lost the wickets of Andre Siddarth and Suryavanshi during the run-chase before captain Mohamed Amaan and KP Karthikeya helped the team to get over the line.
Meanwhile, in semi-final 1, Bangladesh beat Pakistan by seven wickets as they chased down a 117-run target in 22.1 overs. The summit clash between India and Bangladesh will be played in Dubai on Sunday, December 8.
