Former Australia captain Tim Paine revealed the issues Travis Head had with former head coach Justin Langer. The keeper-batter noted that Langer was working continuously to improve Head’s defence but the cricketer was naturally aggressive and the defensive mindset didn’t suit him. However, the flamboyant batter didn’t complain and kept working on his defence as he was new to the Test side and didn’t want to annoy the coach.
However, Paine added that both Head and Langer had ‘real difference in opinion’. After Langer was sacked and Andrew McDonald was roped in as new head coach, Head was given the freedom and that’s when he started flourishing and made a difference in the Test side. Paine believes that the shift in coaching was important for the cricketer to find his mojo and get into the groove.
“I don’t think either of them will mind me saying this, but I think he (Travis Head) and JL (Justin Langer) used to have a real difference of opinion,” Paine was quoted as saying by India Today.

“They were trying really hard for him to work on his defence and it wasn’t the way he wanted to go about it, but he was a young Test player who was trying to impress and trying to stay in the team, so he was trying to please a bit of everyone. I think that’s been the major shift in his output because he is sticking true to the way he wants to play,” Paine further added on Travis Head.
We’re just seeing Head blossom at the moment in all formats of the game: Paine
Head has been an asset to the Australian team for the last couple of years. He played crucial knocks in the World Test Championship final in 2023 and also in the ODI World Cup final 2023. He has played a key role for Australia in all three formats of the game. Talking about the same, Paine mentioned that the cricketer will fail and there will be lean patches but at the moment, he is loving the way Head is playing in international cricket.
“At times he’s going to fail and at times he’s gonna have lean patches, but he’s going to be super aggressive, he’s going to play his shots and he’s going to try and be a matchwinner and we’re just seeing him blossom at the moment in all formats of the game. But Travis Head plays how Travis Head plays and he has absolute conviction in the way he goes about it. It is amazing to watch a guy just at the peak of his powers at the moment,” Paine said.
