Faf Du Plessis has certainly impressed one and all with his style of captaincy that he has carried out for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in IPL 2022 and IPL 2023. Indisputably, it can be said that he had taken the baton successfully from Virat Kohli. In a recent interview, he talked about the captaincy patterns and how the Chennai Super Kings franchise helped him evolve as a player by providing an environment in which every player can just be themselves and have clarity of mind about their roles.
The former South African captain even went on to recall his initial days when he was under Graeme Smith’s captaincy for his national side. Later on, when he came to play for Chennai Super Kings, he was keen into learning about leadership and how these captains go about their duties. He even mentioned that during his first year with CSK, he did not even get a game and his only purpose there was to learn. He also complimented MS Dhoni and his style of captaincy.
The 38-year-old also thanked that he was very lucky to have met some of the great leaders of the game like Graeme Smith, Stephen Fleming, and MS Dhoni. He even said that he learned very early about an important aspect of captaincy that one can be a leader similar to how they actually are.
“But I think also something that I picked up really early on was the importance of being the leader that you are. I could never captain like MS or Virat or Graeme Smith or Stephen Fleming. I find my own way but you can look at things and incorporate from other people,” he revealed to NDTV.
I learned to be captain cool like Dhoni: Faf states
The former South African cricketer also revealed that the biggest lesson that he had learned from Dhoni was to keep a cool head and then take any decision.
“Something that came from MS is how calm he is and I think that’s something that I have shown through my leadership as well. I am always trying to make sure that I am very clear with my players. You give your absolute best and move on. So, I think that will be the biggest one I picked from MS. He is called captain cool for a reason. There’s no greater guy to learn about being cool than MS Dhoni,” he concluded.
